Mini Movie Review: The Grey: ★★★½

Liam Neeson keeps the bad ass streak alive in this man vs. nature thriller. This movie pulls you in, much like how a pack of wolves would drag you into their den. You can't help but being completely enthralled. High tension from beginning to end, I loved every minute of it. Make sure you see this one while its still showing on the big screen. Oh, and word to the wise, stay for the stinger at the end of the credits, you'll enjoy the ending a lot more if you do.

Mini Movie Review: The Artist: ★★★★

Don't let the fact that this is a silent movie scare you off. The Artist proves that if you strip down all the visual effects, digital sound and big name actors, a movie can still be a beautiful experience. This has become one of my favorite films and I'm sure it could be yours too. Go see it in theaters if you can.

Mini Movie Review: Apollo 18: ★★½

I liked the originality of this "found footage" movie, set in space. We follow two NASA astronauts as they make an eerie discovery on the Moon. Keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the ending is not what you expect. This one is definitely worth renting.

Well that's an hour and 50 minutes of my life that I can never get back. This felt like it should have been a made for cable-TV movie with some extreme violence. Its not often I feel ripped off for renting a movie for $1, Skip this one completely!

This is officially the worst rated movie on my blog. 1/2 a star is all I give this steaming pile!

Not as good as I had hoped, but Tin Tin is a fun movie for the whole family. Kids and adults alike should enjoy this one. Not sure if seeing this one in 3D is necessary, but definitely worth seeing.

Mini Movie Review: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol: ★★★

Good but not "great," doesn't live up to the hype. This 4th installment of the MI franchise meets the bar set by MI3, but doesn't raise it. High octane action blends with what feels to be, out of place comedy, makes it hard to decipher if Ghost Protocol is trying to be an action thriller peppered with slapstick comedy . MI4 is definitely worth seeing, but I would wait to rent it.

Mini Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows: ★★★

Better than the original, but drags at many points and feels a bit too long. Enjoyable characters and original, stylized action sequences, thanks to director Guy Ritchie. See this one in theaters if you can afford it, definitely worth seeing.

A valiant effort by director David Fincher, but this reboot falls short. It's not nearly as enthralling as the original Swedish version, but Trent Reznor's eerie soundtrack keeps the otherwise carbon copy plot somewhat intriguing. The recent surge of remakes of great foregin language films proves only one thing...Americans are too lazy to read subtitles. Rent this one(Watch the swedish movie first).

Well acted movie, but a bit too depressing. Don't expect the same light-hearted whit found in Diablo Cody's first film, Juno. The movie was marketed as a comedy, when this is in fact a drama with sprinkles of "comedy" mixed in. Rent this one if you need something to make you feel better about yourself.

Without a doubt the worst in the trilogy. Great action, and special effects. Hokey jokes and gags feel awkward and forced. Simply put, this movie could be a live-action translation of the Saturday morning cartoon. Rent this one if you have an afternoon to waste.

'The Thing' (2011) is not as unforgettable as the 1982 John Carpenter classic, but this sci-fi horror does compliment its predecessor very well. Its obvious first time director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. took notes as this ultra-violent prequel does well in setting up all the pieces for the 1982 hit. Its full of easter eggs and nods to Carpenter's 'The Thing' which makes this a lot of fun for fans. Heijningen deserves credit for his great attention to detail. Don't take your kids, but don't waste any time getting to a theater to see this instant classic. I already can't wait to see it again! "Den er ikkje en bikkje!"

50/50 is what you would call a "feel good comedy." Touching performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen does well in bringing the comic relief. Cancer sucks and this movie reminds us just how unexpectedly it can come and flip our world upside down. If you can't see this in theaters, definitely rent it

Mini Movie Review: Moneyball: ★★★★

'Moneyball' is one of the best movies of 2011. An endearing and motivational true story about an MLB general manager hoping to defy the odds. If you're not a fan of baseball fear not, I don't follow Major League Baseball and was still able to connect with the story. Go see this one in theaters, Brad Pitt will likely get an Oscar nom for his role.

'Killer Elite' tried way too hard to be a espionage conspiracy movie along the lines of 'Patriot Games' when it should have been more like 'the Transporter.' Let's face it, sometimes its better to keep things simple. We want to see Jason Statham kick ass, not act. Although, it was pretty cool to see Clive Owen and De Niro along side Statham. My advice, wait to rent this one. But its definitely worth seeing.

A mission during the 60s doesn't go as well as planned, and the much older team has to clean up the mess they created 30 years later. Although I don't think this film will garner much critical acclaim, I did enjoy it. Wait to rent this one.

Surprisingly decent prequel/reboot of the classic scifi franchise. It took some convincing for me to see this one as I assumed it would be a typical bust that most remakes are. But I'm happy to say I was proven wrong. See this one in theaters or rent it when it comes out on DVD. 3D isn't necessary.

A brilliant modern-day take on ancient Norwegian fairy-tales. 'The Troll Hunter' is already my favorite foreign film of the year. Shot in the style of 'The Blair Witch Project,' the movie was so well received in Norway that it was called "THE cultural event of 2010." Go see this as soon as you can. TROLL!

WOW. Attack the Block is what Super 8 should have been! A band of trouble-making teens, a more dangerous version of the Goonies, battle a horrific alien enemy in the slums of South London. The chemistry among the boys feels natural and gives the film some unique charm. Its all glued together with funny-man Nick Frost and one of the best soundtracks I've heard in years. It's not often you find yourself head-nodding to the score of a Sci-fi movie. BRAVO! If you get the chance go see this in theaters....NOW!

With the unique mash-up of the Scifi and Western genres, an all-star cast and ‘Iron Man’ director Jon Favreau, one would think 'Cowboys & Aliens' film might be epic to the geek degree. But unfortunately it falls WELL short of that. Daniel Craig is convincing as the baddest outlaw in the West, but Harrison Ford, on the other hand, unintentionally looks old and frail (its sad). Overall, this film is right down the middle, its not horrible, but its nothing special. If you’re a huge Daniel Craig fan, or enjoy over CGI-ed visual feasts you’ll probably like this movie. But I’m confident no one will say they “LOVE” Cowboys & Aliens.

'Captain America: The First Avenger' is like having a sandwich made with generic brand meat, cheese and condiments surrounded by by the most delicious bread you’ve ever had. The beginning and ending of the film were very strong, but everything else in between was predictable and bland. If you are a die-hard Marvel fan, like me, don’t waste any time and see this in theaters, otherwise waiting until this one is on DVD won’t be a bad idea. Also, as most Marvel flicks go, make sure you stick around until after the credits to see a teaser for the upcoming Avengers movie!

Never been a fan of any DC universe character outside of Batman, but Green Lantern wasn’t horrible. Ryan Reynolds plays the same character he does in all of his movies. The plot feels rushed and is very predictable. This might as well have been an animated movie but is definitely worth seeing. Check it out on a night when you have nothing better to do, but watch it on Netflix.

Thor delivers everything that a viking could ask for, battles of legendary proportions, interdimensional travel, sibling rivalry/betrayal and Norway! Expect to see a hammer wielding demigod flying around like Superman. By far the most fantastical Marvel feature to date, yet true to the comic book mythology, Thor effectively sets up the final pieces leading to the upcoming Avengers movie. *smashes coffee mug on ground* “I want another!”

P.S. Stay for the stinger following the credits. If you’re not familiar with Marvel lore, read this. It will help you understand the stinger better:

My celebrity lookalikes, or so I'm told...

It has been a very interesting week. Throughout my life I have been told that I resemble certain celebrities, but through the years I have never been labeled as one specific celebrity so often and frequently as I have this year. People have frequently told me I look like the following:

1. Bradley Nowell (lead singer of Sublime) but not dead or on drugs.

But I don't see it.

2. Ethan Suplee (actor) only 100 pounds thinner.

But again, I don't see it.

3. Justin Timberlake (as far fetched as it sounds)

I may have real deal DANCE MOVES, but again, I don't see it.

But over the last few months, on an almost daily basis, I've been hearing the same phrase. In person, on the web, and even from family members. "You look like Jason Statham," those are the words that have been uttered more frequently than you can imagine. Do I think I resemble the British action star? Well, besides sharing the same hair cut and 5 o'clock shadow, no I do not. But it seems others would disagree.

Comments are left on my semi-popular Youtube video "A Tribute to the Handshake in Predator" everyday. And only recently have I been getting comments from complete strangers regarding my Jason Statham-esque looks. Here are a few examples:

Yesterday, while walking to lunch with my friend, a homeless/crazy man, stopped us, asked us if we were famous. He said to me, "You know who you look like? Have you seen the Expendables? You know the guy that drives all the cars and gets all the women? You look just like him, man, for real." Had this not been happening as a regular occurrence I would have just laughed off the compliment and chalked it up to this man's insanity. But at this point, I might just have to buy into the hype. To hell with it, I do look like Jason Statham...

Is there life on Mars? Back in January 23, 2008 NASA posted some photos that had me wondering if Big Foot was actually a martian? And I had this to say about it:

This still image, captured by NASA's Mars rover, "Spirit" in 2004, is stirring up a debate around the world these days. Check out the picture and decide for yourself what the controversy might be. A magnified version of the picture, appears to resemble a human form among a crop of rocks. Let's zoom in and see what all the fuss is about.Some say it looks like a rock, others say it looks to be a figure striding across the surface of the planet. This controversy has been all over the news this week and has reignited the debate about life on the Red Planet.

Personally, if you ask me, I don't think that it is an alien life form at all. In fact, I think it is just a rock structure that just happens to resemble a living figure. But, I do want to point out something funny that I noticed. Look at the position the so called "figure" is in. It looks awfully familiar, doesn't it? The picture above is a frame taken from the Patterson-Gimlin film. It was allegedly filmed on October 20, 1967 by Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin who claimed the film was a genuine recording of a Bigfoot. Many have called the film a hoax, but it is a unique and interesting piece of film. See for yourself...

There is a reason I have laid out all this info. I want to bring it back to the original subject. I say, if the world really wants to believe this picture is of a distant being, I just want to point out that based on past experiences (see above), it would be more likely that NASA has actually spotted Bigfoot on Mars and not an alien life form. I mean come on, it's a single photograph, it could just be a smudge on the lens (think about it, the rover traveled millions of miles through space before arriving. Something could have easily smeared). It could also be a strange pile of rocks, Jimmy Hoffa or even a piece of beef jerky. In fact, if you think about it, after all that pestering those mischievous hikers did to Bigfoot in those classic commercials I wouldn't be surprised if this picture was just Sasquatch's way of getting his revenge.

Coffee or tea, you ask? Here's a little ditty I wrote back on February 5, 2007 that should help you resolve that dilemma, I hope you enjoy:

Today was a beautiful winter day in Southern California. You know, 70 plus degrees, clear skies, the kind of weather that makes one want to tip back a tall piping hot cup of coffee. Actually, wait a tick, that's not exactly my cup of Joe (wow, that pun wasn't intended, but it works quite nicely), I would in fact, prefer a cool crisp ice-cold water over anything on a day like this. But here in SO CAL folks seem to disagree with me. They drink the hot stuff like its some sort of magic potion that has the power to grant anyone their innermost desires. Whether it's an aspiring actor trying to make it big time, or a recent college grad attempting to break into the industry as a director, producer or even writer. To them this hot beverage is their key to "making it" in this town. That's why I think people, specifically in the entertainment business seem to be piling into the nearest Starbucks. The proof is in the company's logo (right), you can plainly see there is some sort of mystical witch pictured right in the center. She has the long wavy black hair and even appears to be using some sort of meditation or telekinetic power, which must be her devious method in mystifying all the tasty drinks inside each store. And for the price you have to pay for one of these hot beverages, there better be more in that cup than just coffee.

I originally thought the name "Starbucks" was derived from the actual amount of money one would pay for a cup of their coffee. If you break down the name you can get the real meaning. It's just like Dan Brown's best-selling book The Da Vinci Code. Words are symbols and symbols are words. If you split "Starbucks" in half it becomes becomes "STAR" and "Bucks." Everyone knows most stars have 5 points, so if you take the word "STAR" and switch it with the number "5" you get "5 bucks coffee." Is it a coincidence or a just secret code thought up by the company's founders to reveal their true motives?

I am almost convinced that Starbucks is also a cover for an ancient religious secret society that has been attempting take over the world for centuries. I mean, if you really think about it, there is one of these coffee shops on every street corner in every major city around the world. Their world domination plans must not be far from completion. So please, keep going to Starbucks, you never know your wildest fantasies may just come true, even if it's world domination.

Changes coming to the old blog...

Its been way too long since I last posted something to this blog, so the first major change is that I am going to start blogging again. Second, I'm thinking that the "Royal Journal" is outdated and in desperate need for change! That's why over the course of the coming weeks, I am going to revamp the site and christen it with a new name (recommendations welcome, but I think I might know what I'll be calling it). Stay tuned, I'm looking forward to getting more involved. Lately I've been ALL too distracted with Twitter, so I will find a way to incorporate my tweets with my blog. Greatest Action Movie EVER MADE?

Today could very well be the best day of my life. The first official trailer for the Sylvester Stallone directed action epic The Expendables was released to the world. Besides the fact that this film contains a cast that could conquer the free world on their own, it seems to be an entertaining film.Never in my wildest imagination would I have ever believed that Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger & Bruce Willis would have ever appeared in the same movie. But the fruition of this film not only proves that there is a God, but proves that he loves us VERY much! See for your self!

Yeah Sly is getting up there in age, but that didn't stop him from making Rambo 4 and as we all know that movie was action art! With the likes of Schwarzenegger, Lundgren, Rourke and Willis, brought together, these "old men" are defying the odds and showing that "old" is the new "bad ass." Never have I ever looked so forward to old age.

For the past few months things have been very hectic in the life of Kristian Odland. The madness all started at the end of July with Comic-con 2009 in San Diego. As usual the convention was completely enjoyable (as you can see in the photo). My badness brothers, Tim & Kyle, joined me at the convention and we partook in the geeky goodness. Click here to see all the pictures from the madness.

Only days following the magic that was Comic-con, came the Odland family vacation. I packed my bags and flew east to Utah to meet up with the family for our week-long trip to Jackson Hole, WY. There was loads of outdoor fun to be had including canoing, hiking and swimming. But as it is true with all vacations, it went by WAY too fast. The downside of my vacation coming to an abrupt end was the fact that I had huge pile of stuff to deal with on my plate of life. A new job at KTLA and the giant chore of finding a new roommate.

Now, weeks later I'm working 7 days a weeks, have found a new roommate and couldn't be more content with life. Now I just need to get back to blogging. I have neglected you, oh Royal Journal, for too long now. Time to reconcile!

I love Christmas, it is the most special time of year, and apparently the sacred holiday has come early in 2009. Only seven months after I witnessed this miracle at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, horror short Treevenge is FINALLY available for the general public to enjoy. This 15 minute blood bath is sure to please horror fans everywhere. So grab your scarf, your mittens and freshly sharpened chainsaw and spread some holiday smear!

Now this just angers me. Early this week word came from the blogsphere and other entertainment news outlets that Hollywood is going to remake (or blasphemize) two of my very favorite horror flicks.
First to be pantsed in front of its entire genre is the hugely popular cult classic An American Werewolf in London. The rights of this horror have been sold to Dimension Films and it will be remade. With VERY few exceptions (Dawn of the Dead (2004)) Hollywood hasn't shown that the horror remake fairs well among true fans of the genre. John Landis wrote and directed this 1981 film, which was also the inspiration behind Michael Jackson's Thriller music video. Probably the ONLY ray of light in this abyss of disgust, the fact that Landis is attached to executive produce the refake, and will likely act as a consultant. Trailer

On deck to be "done over" is the 2008 Swedish horror Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in). That's right, that's no typo, and you didn't misread anything, some genius has decided to remake a movie that wasn't even released (in the US) a full calendar year ago. Talk about slapping director Tomas Alfredson in the face and proclaiming:

"Sorry buddy, you're breakthrough, beautifully shot and directed film happens to be in Swedish and clearly isn't good enough for American audiences. We'll have to redo the whole thing in English this time."

For any of you who happened to see L.T.R.O.I, you know just as well as I do that remaking this film is indeed an insult of gigantic proportions. This movie is easily one of the best, if not THE BEST, vampire movie I have seen. Its simplicity is what gives the film its charm. Hollywood wants to beef it up with visual effects and CGI, it will surley lose that magical element. When asked about his film being remade, Alfredson expressed unhappiness, saying that "Remakes should be made of movies that aren't very good, that gives you the chance to fix whatever has gone wrong" and expressing concern that the end result would be too mainstream.

Cloverfield director Matt Reeves had signed to write and direct the English language refake. Hammer Films acquired the remake rights at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and Overture films plans to release the film in 2010. BOO! boycott this poop!

I find it quite disturbing that Hollywood is willing to rape and desecrate the films that have built the very foundation to the pedestal that the entertainment industry is on today. If this pattern continues, that foundation will erode and all will come tumbling down.

Stallone is bringing OLD SCHOOL action back to the big screen in 2010 with his latest project, The Expendables. Wearing multiple hats again as Actor/Writer/Director (Rocky Balboa, Rambo), Sly has bulked up and painted some tats on for his latest character, Barney Ross. He has also built a veteran all-star action movie cast to butt heads with and blow up more real estate than Donald Trump owns. In no particular order they are...

Eric Roberts, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Danny Trejo, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is rumored to make a possible cameo. For face value this looks to be the action movie all us 1980s babies hoped to one day see, with a few recent additions, of course. Had you said then that we would get the chance to see Rambo, Captain Ivan Drago and (possibly) the Terminator all in the same movie you would have been called crazy. Obviously, we have to thank steroids for making all of this possible. Thank goodness Hollywood doesn't have an "anti-doping policy" the more muscle-bound the action movie, the better! Rantings of a mad Utah Jazz fan...

I know most of you don't give a damn about the Utah Jazz, or even the NBA for that matter, but it is necessary for my own sanity to rant about the conclusion of this years season.

Going into the playoffs most Jazz fans knew that it was going to be an uphill battle facing Kobe and his Los Angeles Fakers, I'm the first to admit that. In fact, I would have been SHOCKED had Utah come out on top in the end. Yeah the Jazz had their "shiny moments" against the Lakers, but in the end those moments of execution hardly sidetracked the Laker course and Los Angeles closed the series 4 games to 1.

So what now?

I'll tell you what, some changes MUST be made. If I was offered the chance to make aforementioned changes this off season, without any hesitation they would be:

1. TOUGHNESS - With very few player exceptions, the team as a whole is neither mentally or physically tough enough to prosper in an NBA post season. Charles Barkley said it best while referencing the Jazz "Its hard to win in the playoffs when the toughest guy on your team is the coach." Jerry Sloan as a player was notorious for being rough and tough, was even named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team 4 times. Sloan is also the fourth all-time winning coach in NBA history. He's as hard ass as it comes, my hats off to you Jerry, getting ejected in the final Jazz game of the post season says it all(below). If nothing else at all, the Jazz should try to emulate Jerry's intensity ON the court.

2. Loose the Booz - Carlos Boozer is a worthless power forward. While he was out with an injury during the regular season, the Jazz thrived. You would imagine that a player of his size and stature (6'9" 266) would be a force in the post, but Boozer consistently shoots fade-away jumpers and throws up weak lay ups like a terrified middle-schooler. He's done nothing more than prove to Utah that he's a big softie that can't contribute when it matters. He also seems to believe that screaming after his in-game mistakes makes everything better. Seriously, who can argue...Paul Millsap has done more good on the court CONSISTENTLY than Boozer has done all season. I'd give Millsap the starting position (if he decides to stay) or bring in someone else for far less money. Losing Boozer would open up a lot of money for the Jazz, he made $11.6 million this season. Lets hope he opts out of his remaining contract before the start of next season. *fingers crossed.

I could easily keep going, but these were the biggest to chunks I needed to get off my chest. Now that our season is officially over, the Jazz need to spend this off-time recouping and thinking about how to building a better supporting cast for Deron Williams, he deserves it, Utah deserves it, hell, the late Larry H. Miller deserves it. That's my rant and I'm stickin' to it!

Arnold will be a Terminator again...

It's official, Arnold Schwarzenegger will be appearing in this summer's revamp of the Terminator franchise, well sort of. Variety reported this week that the Guvunator revealed recently that his "likeness" will appear in Terminator Salvation, but he himself will not be acting. In other words, a digital recreation of Arnie will be used instead.

"A body-cast mold of Schwarzenegger, created when he first appeared as the muscle-ripped cyborg (in the '80s), provided the basis for a digital-effects version of his famous character. The figure appears in "Terminator Salvation" as a living, breathing actor."

"Schwarzenegger viewed the resulting footage and gave his go-ahead just in time for McG to include the footage before the helmer completes his cut of the movie."

Terminator Salvation opens in theaters May 21st.

Dare I say "BEST SCIFI" movie of 2009...

If you see ONE scifi film in the theaters this summer, this has GOT to be it. Moon pits Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) as a lonely astronaut approaching the end of his 3 year contract working a moon base. Things quickly start to change putting him in a spiral of delusion and confusion, which Director Duncan Jones captures beautifully in the spirit of scifi classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I was fortunate enough to see this film at the Sundance Film Festival 2009, and can confidently add that it was one of my personal favorites this year. Stunning visual effects, a great script and a noteworthy performance by Sam Rockwell, are all golden factors in this cinema treasure. I highly recommend, that given the option, you check this film out. You won't be disappointed.
Moon will be released in New York and Los Angeles on June 12.

As an employee of NBC, there are frequently certain perks I am able to enjoy, one being that I can attend tapings of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Today, I was lucky enough to see Prince perform one of his new songs on the show. This is how it ended...

Let me ask you, what would you do if Prince handed you his guitar with the very strings on them still vibrating? Well it just so happens that the guy who had the guitar passed to him writes for TMZ. Here is his reaction to the epic hand-off. FAIL!

Killer Robots and Porn....Utah will like!

I learned two things today that quite frankly don't surprise me at all.

First, the revamped Terminator movie, Terminator Salvation, is going to be one helluvan action movie. This new trailer justifies my claim:

Speaking of "sucking," I also learned today that the little, sheltered, ultra-conservative, Mormon state of Utah, (my home state) apparently has a hefty craving for Porn. Again, this is not very surprising...

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Utah is number 1 for online pornography consumption. A study by a Harvard Business School professor says Utah out-browses all other conservative states when it comes to the use of the online smut.

Also, the Tribune article mentions an analysis published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, "Online porn subscription rates are higher in states that enacted conservative legislation banning same-sex marriage or civil unions and where surveys show support for conservative positions on religion, gender roles and sexuality."

This is exactly why many say "Life is not fair." I have been long looking forward to the release of a little film called Outlander. But it turns out that certain big wigs in the film industry have managed to sink that hope, yet again, only releasing it in a limited number of cities last month. Looks like I'll have to wait for DVD.

This cross-genre film pits a marooned pilot of an other-world space craft against Vikings in 709 A.D. Norway. James Caviezel (known as Jesus in the Passion of the Christ) plays Kainan, a soldier from a far away planet whose spaceship crash lands on Earth carrying himself and a deadly alien stowaway. Before Kainin has a chance to track down the ferocious alien he is captured by viking warriors and held prisoner. As the alien terrorizes and wreaks havoc on a nearby viking village, Kainin is asked to fight alongside his viking captors. Ron Pearlman (Hellboy) and John Hurt join the cast in this scifi/fantasy/epic that is produced by Lord of the Rings Executive Producer, Barrie Osborne.

On the surface, Outlander, sounds a bit ridiculous, but some critics and audiences have proven its not complete trash. In fact, many say that Outlander is destined for a cult audience. The film has already been released in Spain and made $3 million only playing on 200 screens. It makes one wonder how well it would have done had it opened wide in the U.S.. OUTLANDER is also set for UK release on April 24 2009. This may not be a science fiction smash hit like Aliens, or Predator, but Outlander has all the makings to be a fun and highly entertaining cult classic. I know I'll be picking this one up on DVD and maybe even BluRay.

Gearing Up For Sundance 2009....

Now that a new week is upon us, I find myself trying to mentally and physically prepare for my grand return to the Sundance Film Festival 2009 in Park City, Utah. I have not attended this annual collection of Independent films since I made my Utah exodus in 2006. As you can imagine, I am more than excited to make my return. With two "fest rookie" friends at my side, Matt (NY) and Megan (LA) we are going to conquer a total of 7 screenings in 4 days. Since the festival is already well underway (has been on since Thurs. Jan. 15), we will be a little behind the buzz, which from my experience will be to our benefit.

Our indy film adventure begins on Wednesday, when we fly into Salt Lake City. Matt and I have the exact same layover in Las Vegas, and coincidentally will be on the same flight from Vegas to SLC. We couldn't have planned it better! Once we land we will meet up with Megan, somehow, some way and will head to my parents house in Park City (pictured right). We'll hit the sack and rest up for the next few days, which will be mad busy.

As you can see we have a lot to look forward to this year. Many of these films are already getting lots of critical acclaim. Some have already been picked up for distribution (Black Dynamite). Although, I must say that my Norwegian bias paired with my love for horror movies has made Dead Snow the must see film of the Festival for me this year. I will do my best to give my take on each of these flicks in blogs to come. Stay tuned and stay warm while we're freezing our asses off in Park City.

Please don't strike SAG, the industry will never be the same.

A long time ago I mentioned that my brother Tim got a job for Skullcandy as a designing artist. It's been a trip for me to be shopping at my local Best Buy and spot an entire display of Skullcandy headphones with my brothers art all over them. As you can imagine, I am so very proud of my brother Timmy and all he's accomplished. In fact, it excites me to say that he and I are collaborating on something as we speak. The Spirit Sucks?

So I thought I should share this piece of valuable information. I'm sitting here, waiting for an advanced screening to start and I just so happen to overhear a group of entertainment journalists discussing Frank Millers new movie, The Spirit. I wish I could say that what I heard was good. These guys were ranting about how embarrassed Frank should be having directed this "royal piece of sh*t." They continued to say that studio heads will know that the "Frank Miller experiment is a total failure." "He should go back and stay in the comic book world."

Just a little FYI, you might want to sit this one out while its in theaters, wait for this one to stink on DVD. I know I will!

You don't have to be a fan of Wrestling to appreciate this film. The Wrestler debuted at the Toronto Film Fest, and opens in theaters at the end of December to qualify for the Oscars. Darren Aronofsky's latest work, The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke, is earning critical acclaim. Some have even called this film the "Resurrection of Rourke's career." I remember when...I was a news producer...

It was just over 2 years ago that officially left KUTV in Salt Lake City to pursue my career in Los Angeles. For two and a half years I was part of the 2 News team that informed the entire State of Utah about the happenings of the world. I worked as a morning producer for a good chunk of that time. My main responsibility was to write/produce the hour-long newscast, 2 News this Morning: Weekend Edition. I really enjoyed the job, but I loved the people I worked with on a daily basis. I have very many fond memories from Channel 2, from my first day as an intern, to the day I made my "On Air" debut, I will never forget my time in news.

I was lucky to be a part of the weekend morning show from its inception. All the anchors, reports, editors and photographers I worked with, made my newscasts look great and were always a riot. I couldn't have done it without them.

Recently I came across some old airchecks of my final show. It's kind of fun, because the anchors chose to include me in all of the the feature segments. Take a look-see:

Looking at Halloween past and present...

I spent a good part of the weekend, getting this year's Halloween costume in order. For some reason I had a really hard time figuring out what to do this year. In fact, for most of October I had NO idea what I wanted to do. But inspiration came to me two days ago, and I think it is going to be good. I am not going to reveal my idea just yet but my hope is that folks will enjoy it, just as much as I am.

My College Roommate Murdered...R.I.P. Brad Gerrard

Today I learned some very sad and disturbing news. My Freshman year college Room mate, Brad Gerrard, who was working as a corrections officer was murdered in cold blood last night in Buckeye, Arizona.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Brad's wife, children and extended family. He leaves behind his pregnant wife and one child.
