It's official, today is the first day of the HANDS FREE cell phone Law in California. Finally some relief on the already over-trafficked highways of California. The Law makes it completely illegal for anyone to use a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle. BUT Motorists 18 and over may use a "hands-free device (ie, bluetooth, ear piece, etc)."Don't worry too much because it looks like the fine isn't really that much of a financial setback, nor will it show any points on your driving record. According to the new law, The base fine for the FIRST offense is $20 and $50 for subsequent convictions. With the addition of penalty assessments, the fines can be more than triple the base fine amount.
